Master the wine maturation like never before

It is essential to preserve the wine against oxidation and contaminating microorganisms (eg acetobacteria and/or Brettanomyces sp.). Thus, filling is an essential procedure to protect the wine from oxidation and to maintain the desired SO2 level inside the barrel.

Leticia Chacon-Rodriguez

Head Winemaker & Winery Manager
UC Davis Teaching and Research Winery

“The UC Davis Teaching and Research Winery was designed to be the most advanced winery in the world and the incorporation of WINEGRID solutions was another opportunity to introduce students to commercial fermentation monitoring systems, including the ability to model and predict the fermentation outcomes. Monitoring with this technology allows us to analyze the whole wine lot versus just a sample of the lot, in addition to having continuous monitoring from any location in the winery. WINEGRID’s open API was used to extract real-time data and present to students in an online dashboard for teaching. The flexibility of the WINEGRID to monitor fermentations in different size vessels will allow us to create new learning opportunities for students in the future.”

“We’ve been using WINEGRID technology since 2018.
The accuracy and reliability of the Wineplus density and temperature measurements have been proven compared to traditional manual measurements.
The real-time monitoring of the fermentation process allowed us to reduce sampling time as well as decrease the waste of wines.
But mainly, this technology was decisive in the creation of a new strategy for vinification management by automatically triggering pump overs during the fermentation, based on real-time density monitoring.”

“Previously, we used to collect a sample manually and then take it to a laboratory to be analyzed by laboratory equipment. This new WINEGRID technology allows us to do the analysis on the spot and do it repeatedly as often as they are necessary. This offers much greater reliability on the analysis and also the possibility to control in real time what is happening inside a tank with fermenting must.” in SIC Notícias

“Thanks to WINEGRID, we were able to monitor the evolution in the density of our wines online and in real-time during pilot fermentation tests on the 2020 vintage, which contributed key information to the winemaking decision process. These achievements played a significant role in the development and implementation of an IoT infrastructure and a platform to manage winemaking processes in our wine cellars.”

Osvaldo Amado

Director of Oenology at Global Wines Group

“WINEGRID technology is the most revolutionary technology in the last 5 or even 10 years. In some wineries and producers, it takes two or three people dedicated full time to be able to measure the density and, consequently, the fermentation kinetics. In our specific case, we used to manually collect measurements in the morning and at night, with this technology, we have a continuous monitoring of the fermentation kinetics of the various deposits that we have in fermentation.
A careful fermentation, well monitored, means measuring what is happening at all times and thus we know when and how to intervene. WINEGRID monitoring systems are, therefore, a very useful tool. “

“With the WINEGRID technology the fermentation process is now analyzed in real-time with high precision data. We have more detailed control of the process and the winery saved money in human resources. The savings in waste of must or wine due to better monitoring and reduced manual sampling are also expressive.”

“In the year 2022 we installed two WINEGRID solutions.  The FMS solution, which measures density and temperature and enables the monitoring of fermentation kinetics, allowed us to follow the fermentation conditions, avoiding daily sample work and also the use of oenological products. With the e-aphrom pressure sensors, used in the fermentation of sparkling wine, we have monitored the pressure curve on a digital support on a daily basis.”

WINEGRID – a unique project for the art of the winemaking

In 2014, after 14 years of applied scientific research on the topic of optical sensors at  Telecommunications Institute of University of Aveiro, Rogério Nogueira and Lúcia Bilro founded WATGRID. The main objective was to bring high quality, accurate and reliable liquid technology to the market, enabling the digitalization of processes in any liquid-related industry. A few months after the company’s foundation, a new product line was created to fill a gap identified: the precise, accurate, remote and real-time monitoring of the winemaking process. Since then, through WINEGRID brand, the company has been delivering its proprietary, unique and cutting-edge technology, along with top-notch customer support, to wine producers all over the world.

The innovative character of the company is based on its extraordinary human capital with more than 15 skilled collaborators in the areas of Oenology, Electrical Engineering, Physical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Data Science, Chemistry, and more. This team, with some members accumulating more than 20 years of experience in sensors design, place WINEGRID in a unique position to be a reliable strategic innovation partner for winemakers.

More than 150 million wine bottles were already produced with the precious help of WINEGRID’s solutions, and the increasing adoption of this technology by the most important wine producers is a validation of its capabilities and obvious benefits.
